Dewasanzan is the name for the 3 mountains in Dewa. They are a major part in the life of ascetics of the mountain faith. People believe Prince Hachiko was led by a holy bird with 3 legs, climbed Mt. Haguro and became Haguro’s incarnation in 593 A.D., more than 1400 years ago. He is said to have built a small shrine at the top of the mountain thus founding the center of the faith.

It is about 1.8km to the shrine and you can see hundreds of stone steps and cedar trees on the way.
It is said the trees were planted by Betto in 1648 and took 13 years to complete.
This is a magnificent shrine for Mt. Gassan, Mt. Haguro and Mt. Yudono.
It is 28m tall and 26m wide with a 2.1m thick thatched roof.
No other thatched building is as solemn as this shrine in Japan. It is designated as an important part of national intangible heritage.
Mt. Gassan is the tallest of the three mountains at 1,984 meters and the biggest shield volcano in Japan. All around Midagahara, you can see various types of alpine plants as if you were in an earthly paradise.
Mt. Yudono is 1504 meters tall and called “Okunoin”. If you climb halfway up the mountain, you will see a dark brown rock and hot spring water coming out from the rock. It is the object of worship for the Shinto shrine.
It is said that the general Masakado Taira ordered it built and took 6 years to complete, from 931 to 937. It is designated as a national treasure.
The general Yoritomo Minamoto donated this Golden shrine to subjugate the Fujiwara clan in Hiraizumi. It is designated as a national cultural treasure.
