After the Meiji Restoration, samurais became farmers and they Cultivated Matsugaoka.
Five buildings of three story silkworm houses still exist. One restored building is the hall.
There is a gallery, shed and pottery center. It is a national historic spot.

The temple is designated as a national scenic beauty, also called “flower temple”, famous for various flower blooms.
There you can drink powdered tea and practice Zen meditation.

This temple is known to provide the setting for “Gassan”, a novel written by Atsushi Mori. Tetsumonkai Shonin (priest’s) mummy is kept in this temple.

This hall is dedicated to the 47th Yokozuna, grand champion of sumo wrestling Kashiwado, and to teach people about him. He is an honorary citizen of Tsuruoka.

There are 90 kinds and 3000 rose plants in the garden. You can enjoy viewing lots of roses from June to October. The Rose garden festival is held every June.
